The Lord allowed the army of Nebuchadnezzar to destroy the first temple around 586 B.C. Then, after 70 years of captivity, faithful Jews returned to Jerusalem and began to build the second temple under the leadership of Zerubbabel, the governor, and Josiah, the High Priest. This second temple, the way it was built, and the events and prophecies surrounding it, are an intentional picture of the true temple of God that was raised up through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
